One bonus not mentioned here is that theoretically an upper entrance could cut down on the number of times a bee must pass through the excluder which may help prevent excluder related wear and tear on their wings/bodies.

The hive we are using is the size of three Langstroth deep boxes turned sideways and placed in a row, only without the sides in between. It is 4 feet 3/4" long. The depth is standard Langstroth deep. We used three standard ten frame inner covers and made a custom top cover. We have two, one with a flat roof, the other with a peaked roof.

When processing nectar I see bees lined up at the upper part of the box fanning at the 3" slots but don''t see many around the 3/4" holes on those particular boxes in comparison.

03.02.2012· A number of years ago a gentleman patented a moveable hive top entrance. It is a box filled in (similar to Honey Runn''s insulated inner cover) with an opening.
